What is the
difference between a polish and a wax?
Although this often trips up car enthusiasts,
the difference between glazes and polishes is quite simple. Polishes are
abrasive, when you polishing your car, you are essentially taking off a layer at
a microscopic level. Glazes do no such thing, but rather fill in the tiny clear
coat imperfections and lines that polishing leaves behind. By glazing, you’re
successfully sealing in the work that the polishes have done, which will
enhance the high-gloss appearance of your paint after you’ve followed it up
with a wax.
Should I use household cleaners
to wash my car?
Household cleaners like dishwashing detergent are specifically manufactured to
dissolve grease. Wax is essentially a grease, household cleaners will remove
your car’s wax finish; leaving your auto with little shine and even less
protection. Some household detergents have fine abrasive and these can scratch
your car’s surface.
Should I use once-a-year wax and polish
products?
Your car deserves a lot better than once-a-year products. Your car is most
probably your second largest investment after your home. That being said you
should not compromise on the quality of the products you use to maintain it.
Regular washing and waxing pays enormous dividends. Once a year products will
become obvious and to the detriment as the years go by.
Should I wax my vehicle in the sun?
That’s a definite no no, It’s recommended by most recognised manufacturers that
one waxes out of direct sunlight. When your paint’s finish is hot, it hardens the
wax to a point where it can be difficult to remove.
Should I wash my car often?
One should wash as often as is practical and depending on the road conditions
and weather fluctuations. Most car owners wash their vehicles at least once a
week. Modern car paints are hardy and not easily diminished by constant
washing but the method and type of
product that is used is of utmost importance.
Should I use
free car washes and car washes in general?
One needs to understand that car washes are
basically a convenience and not the proper manner to care for an expensive
investment. Most car washes are unsupervised and improper use of high volume
spray jets can and will damage your paintwork. Use car washes as a second
option aside from professional detailers.
If a
little car wash soap is good, is a lot better?
No. Too much car wash concentrate can leave a film on your vehicle. Use exactly
what the manufacturer specifies.
Is it a good idea to put a wax coat before
winter?
Wash your vehicle as often as possible during the winter months as cold weather
diminishes the paint protection and ensure a very high quality wax protection
after a sealant or glaze. Remember a glaze brings out the depth and colour but
does not protect the paintwork. Wax on the other hand protects the glaze,
sealant and paintwork.
Should I
worry about water spots and bird mess?
Simple — get them off as soon as possible. Attack those water spots before the
sun has a chance to evaporate them, and they’ll come right off.
